Who would have thought Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would have an episode almost entirely in black and white? I really enjoyed this episode and the way it was made to be like a film noir. I liked that they were also able to use the glitch in Coulson's system as a way to explain the black and white style, as well as the narration. I think they did a really good job with making the episode fit the noir genre.
I enjoyed the fact that this episode was all about whether Sousa would live or die, and that Coulson knew what the events of that day were supposed to be. I'm glad that the agents were able to save Sousa while still making sure that history takes place. I am excited to see what the dynamic between him and the S.H.I.E.L.D. team will be like in future episodes.
We also saw the return of Wilfred Malick, who is now older and a double agent in S.H.I.E.L.D. and was the one who wanted Sousa killed. I mentioned this in last week's review but I think it's very interesting that Sousa knew about Hydra before anyone else and that the father of one of the future heads of Hydra was the one who wanted him killed. The scene when he revealed his suspicion to Daisy, Mack and Coulson and they had almost no reaction was great.
Also, May has powers now? I hope they are going to address it a bit more because they really just brushed over it. It's ironic how the one person who has no emotions can now experience everyone else's. I'm interested to see where this goes.
I saved the best for last. Enoch had the best scenes of the episode. They were hilarious. No one had time to talk to Enoch and just when someone finally wanted to talk to him, he had lost all hope and just put Deke on the phone with the other agents. Even though I should feel bad for Enoch, I can't because sad Enoch makes me laugh.
I think that's all I have to say. I don't want every week's review to be too long. I have a couple of theories that I'd like to try to post before the next episode.
Next week's episode is supposed to take place in the 1970's, so it will be interesting to see how everyone reacts to the time period. To Sousa it will feel like the future, the older agents will be back in a time they lived through when they were young, while the younger agents will be seeing a past they've never experienced.
One last thing. WHERE IS FITZ? I really hope we see him soon. I know Simmons said she can't know where he is (whatever that means) but I think at some point in the season someone will mess up the timeline or someone or a couple of people will be left behind in time and Fitz will have to return in order to fix the mistakes.
